What is Malai made of ?
Malai is a biocomposite material based on organic Bacterial Cellulose grown on waste water from mature coconuts and natural fibre from Banana stem, Hemp & Sisal. It is produced in the form of sheets 120x80cm large in three gsm (refer to strength & thickness : 500/ 650/ 800 gsm). Malai is suitable for creating bags, accessories, light footwear (uppers material for sandals / slippers), wallets, interior objects & stationery.
How does Malai compare with animal leather ?
It is important to note that Malai is not intending to imitate animal leather nor is it a complete substitute for all applications. Malai is a material that can be used as an animal leather alternative in various applications, and has a similar look & feel. The composition and structure is very different, and comparable to vegetable tanned leather of similar thickness.
Is it biodegradable?
Yes, Malai is completely biodegradable - you can even compost it in your home compost. Nothing in the materials composition will impact its ability to compost within 90-120 days.
Is it vegan?
Yes, Malai is PETA certified vegan material, nothing in the material composition is of animal origin.
Is it water resistant ?
Malai is water resistant from both surfaces (front & back) but not throughout the material - this is an improvement our R&D is currently working on. Therefore we recommend to treat and seal the material edges of your products with carnauba / beeswax or similar edge sealing products.
How durable is it?
Malai’s durability is comparable to that of washable paper or Pinatex materials. The durability is also determined by the climate to which the material is exposed, and on material care. For more information about the material care please visit the section material care & composting.
We recommend no exposure to extreme heat and humidity conditions.
What colours do you have?
We can produce Malai in 9 color shades. All the shades are achieved by using natural mordant free plant based dyes. Due to the choice of dyes no two sheets of Malai biocomposite will be color identical - the difference in shade can range up to 10%. We try to maintain the dyeing results as consistently as possible however this method has its limitations and we appreciate your understanding of this.
Can you make custom colors?
Yes, we can create customized shades of Malai. Although it is important to remember that due to our exclusive use of natural plant dyes the shades we achieve are in an earthy tonality. If you are interested in having a custom color developed, please reach out to one of our email IDs with a color reference. Special charges for color development and sampling apply.
